Course Curriculum

Discover how each program is uniquely designed to inspire learning

The Master of Indigenous Relations (MIR) program at Laurentian University is a full-time, two-year graduate program that requires completion of six core courses and a research thesis. Upon admission, students must have a faculty supervisor to guide their research and are required to form a thesis committee by the end of their first term, consisting of the supervisor and two additional MIR faculty members who oversee research progress and participate in the thesis defense. The core courses include Indigenous Relations and Worldviews—Theory and Practice (MIRE 5006 EL), Indigenous Research Methodologies (MIRE 5016 EL), Natural Resources and the Environment from Indigenous Perspectives (MIRE 5056 EL), The United Nations and International Indigenous Issues (MIRE 5046 EL), Indigenous Relations in Community Contexts (MIRE 5066 EL), and Special Topics in Indigenous Relations (MIRE 5106 EL), with many courses requiring foundational prerequisites. After completing coursework, students conduct independent research and submit a thesis (MIRE 5200 EL), which must be successfully defended before their committee. This program offers a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum focused on Indigenous perspectives, research methodologies, community engagement, and global Indigenous issues, preparing graduates for leadership roles in Indigenous governance, policy, advocacy, and research sectors.
