The Master of Banking and Finance Law requires students to complete a total of 100 credit points and is structured to accommodate a wide range of academic backgrounds and professional commitments. Students who have not previously completed a law degree from a common law jurisdiction are required to undertake the subject Fundamentals of the Common Law in addition to completing 87.5 credit points from the prescribed list of subjects. Those who already hold a law degree from a common law jurisdiction must complete 87.5 credit points from the prescribed list and may select 12.5 credit points from subjects available within the Master of Laws, excluding Fundamentals of the Common Law and the Minor Thesis. The course is designed to be flexible and compatible with the schedules of busy working professionals, with subjects delivered in various teaching formats and timing options. The Melbourne Law Masters subjects are offered from February to December, with most subjects taught in intensive blocks over five days, while some are delivered weekly for two hours across the semester. Students may also complete subjects online through a combination of pre-recorded lectures, live interactive sessions, discussion boards and additional digital learning resources. Subjects delivered on campus are taught in interactive, seminar-based formats at the Law Building in Melbourne, encouraging peer discussion and real-world engagement. Full-time students typically enrol in 50 credit points per semester and can complete the program in one year, while part-time domestic students enrol in 25 credit points per semester and generally complete the course in two years. Part-time students may reduce their load to 12.5 credit points per half-year period, with a maximum duration of four years. Students who require breaks must apply formally for a leave of absence. Further details on subjects and requirements are available in the Master of Banking and Finance Law Handbook.
