The Bachelor of Science with a focus on astrophysics provides students with a structured pathway to gain both foundational and advanced knowledge in the physical sciences, mathematics, and astronomy, combined with hands-on industry experience. In the first semester, students establish core scientific skills through units such as Concepts of Biology, Chemistry 1 or Introduction to Chemistry, Energy and Motion or Introduction to Physics, and Preliminary Mathematics or Calculus and Applications, alongside Foundations of Statistics. These units develop analytical, quantitative, and experimental skills essential for scientific study. In the second semester, students explore broader scientific challenges and specialisations, including Sustainability Challenges in Science and Discovering the Universe, while continuing mathematics through Essential Mathematics, Calculus and Applications, or Linear Algebra and Applications. As students progress, major astrophysics units such as Earth, Moon, Mars and Beyond and Astrobiology and the Origins of Life build expertise in planetary science, astrobiology, and the physical processes that shape the cosmos. Core and elective units in subsequent semesters, including Introduction to Supercomputing, Galaxies and their Place in the Universe, Cosmology and the Large-scale Structure of the Universe, and From Stars to Black Holes, develop advanced understanding of astrophysical phenomena and computational techniques used in modern research. A distinguishing feature of this program is the integrated professional placement, available as a 12-month major placement or a 6-month minor placement, which provides practical experience, exposure to scientific research environments, and industry networking opportunities. Electives allow students to tailor their learning to personal interests, expanding knowledge in related areas of science. By combining theoretical foundations, advanced astrophysics study, and practical experience, graduates are equipped for careers in research, data analysis, education, or further postgraduate study, contributing to scientific discovery and understanding of the universe.
