Course Curriculum

Discover how each program is uniquely designed to inspire learning

The Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology is structured to integrate coursework, practicum placements, and doctoral research, providing students with a balanced combination of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and research expertise. The program is delivered over three or more years, with the first two years required to be undertaken full-time, and from the third year, domestic students may choose to continue full-time or part-time. Coursework makes up ten percent of the degree, practicum placements account for twenty percent, and doctoral research comprises seventy percent, ensuring that research remains the central component of the program. The research component requires students, under the supervision of academic staff, to carry out a program of original research in psychology. Students must attend and present at seminars and complete other relevant activities while producing a thesis of up to 80,000 words that demonstrates independence of thought, rigorous investigation, and the ability to contribute to the field. Submission may include published works if approved. The coursework is conducted during the first two years and emphasizes competency-based assessments that reflect professional skills, knowledge, and attitudes. Coursework is delivered primarily at Monash University’s Clayton campus and the Turner Clinics in Notting Hill, with some travel to other locations expected.Practicum placements provide hands-on experience, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge under the supervision of experienced clinical supervisors. Students complete a minimum of 1,000 hours of professional experience, including at least 400 hours of direct client contact, across three different hospital or community settings. The program is structured sequentially, beginning with foundational coursework in psychological assessment, ethics, psychopathology, and cognitive-behavioral therapies, before progressing to introductory, intermediate, and advanced placement and case analysis units. Additional units in health psychology, behavioural medicine, and advanced clinical practice further consolidate clinical expertise. This integrated structure ensures that graduates develop the research competence, clinical skills, and professional knowledge required to excel as clinical psychologists in both research and applied settings.
