The PhD in Disability Studies at Flinders University offers an interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment through the Flinders Caring Futures Institute. The program is designed to develop researchers who can make meaningful contributions to promoting human rights, social inclusion, and quality in practice for people with disability. Candidates are supported to engage in innovative research projects that address complex, real-world challenges, often referred to as “wicked problems.”Research within the Institute spans multiple key domains important to people with disability. These include enhancing the quality of formal services and supports, preventing and responding to violence and abuse, improving educational outcomes and learning experiences, and understanding and promoting social and emotional wellbeing. Through these areas, PhD candidates are equipped to develop evidence-based solutions, influence policy and practice, and generate knowledge that has tangible impacts on the lives of individuals and communities. The program encourages flexibility and creativity, welcoming research project ideas that may not fit neatly into the predefined domains, allowing students to pursue innovative topics aligned with their interests and expertise. Candidates work closely with expert supervisors and collaborate with leading organisations, community partners, professionals, and people with disability, ensuring that research is socially relevant, outcome-driven, and impactful.Flinders University values diversity and inclusivity and actively encourages applications from people with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates, and individuals from marginalised backgrounds. The PhD program supports students in developing advanced research skills, including critical analysis, research design, methodology, and interdisciplinary collaboration, fostering the ability to contribute original knowledge and drive systemic change.Graduates of the PhD in Disability Studies emerge as leaders in research and advocacy, prepared to influence academic, policy, and community settings.
