The civil and structural engineering technologist degree is a three-year full-time program that combines foundational units, specialized stream units, industrial work experience, and a final year capstone project. Each academic year is divided into two semesters, with students typically enrolling in four to five units per semester. The curriculum is designed to progressively build core engineering knowledge, practical skills, and discipline-specific expertise. In the first year, students focus on essential subjects such as engineering mathematics, physics, materials, CAD, programming, and professional practice, laying a strong foundation for more advanced learning. The second year deepens technical competence through units in engineering management, construction engineering, surveying, hydraulics, soil mechanics, structural analysis, and geotechnical engineering. Students also explore strength of materials and design of steel and timber structures. In the third year, the emphasis shifts to advanced civil design, road and concrete structure design, sustainability, and the capstone project, which is worth nine credit points and provides an opportunity to integrate and apply learning to a substantial engineering problem. Two elective units are selected from a diverse list that includes data analytics, building information modeling, automation, modular construction, and advanced mathematics. To further enhance practical readiness, the program includes mandatory hands-on workshops and an industrial experience component. These zero-credit but compulsory workshops are distributed throughout the course and are designed to build critical practical competencies in a controlled environment. The industrial experience unit ensures that students gain real-world exposure and apply their academic knowledge in professional settings. The program structure supports both academic learning and practical training, ensuring graduates are job-ready and capable of contributing to a wide range of infrastructure projects. This comprehensive and industry-relevant approach prepares students for careers in both the public and private sectors of the civil and structural engineering industry.
