The Art degree requires students to complete 360 credit points, including 240 credit points from core units and 120 credit points from elective units. Students can choose electives freely from the School of Arts and Humanities or other university schools, with the option to complete a 4-unit subject-based Elective Sequence, which can be recorded as a minor on their transcript. The course structure spans three years, with each year divided into two semesters.In the first year, foundational courses focus on developing essential art skills and knowledge. Semester 1 includes units like Foundations of Art Practice 1, Dialogues with Art, and Drawing, while Semester 2 continues with Foundations of Art Practice 2 and Painting, complemented by elective options. This year establishes core technical abilities and introduces critical engagement with art.The second year advances practical studio work and experimental approaches. Semester 1 features Printmaking + Artists Books and a major studio project called Experimental Practices, which accounts for 30 credit points. Semester 2 includes Time-based Art and another 30-credit studio unit, Public Encounters, fostering exploration of contemporary art in public contexts. Electives remain integral to customizing study.The third year emphasizes professional preparation and deeper studio investigations. Semester 1 offers Professional Practice in the Arts and Investigation + Contemporary Art studio units, while Semester 2 culminates in Exploration + Presentation, a substantial studio project. Electives continue to provide academic breadth.Students can supplement their studies with elective sequences in Photography, including Camera Work, Film Photography, and Visual Storytelling, or Design units like Design Foundations and Digital Design. A range of general electives such as Creative Writing, Radio Production, and Ceramics enrich the curriculum.
