COURSE CURRICULUM

The course structure of the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) in Earth Sciences provides students with a strong foundation in geology, geophysics, environmental science, data analysis, and planetary systems while developing advanced research and professional skills. In the first year, students study fundamental concepts of the Earth, geology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, programming, and scientific data analysis, building essential knowledge for understanding natural processes. The second year focuses on advanced Earth science topics, including mineralogy, geochemistry, field geology techniques, earth resources, sustainability, sedimentology, stratigraphy, petrology, and geophysical applications, supported by research, leadership, and entrepreneurship training. In the third year, students explore specialised areas such as climate and biosphere science, structural geology, hydrogeology, engineering geology, ore deposits, basin dynamics, tectonics, environmental geoscience, mineral exploration, and Earth observation technologies. The final year involves advanced analytical techniques and a major honours dissertation or advanced science capstone project, allowing students to apply their knowledge to research and industry-related challenges. Through fieldwork, laboratory studies, research projects, and flexible elective choices, students develop skills in geological analysis, environmental management, resource exploration, and planetary science. The course prepares graduates for careers in Earth sciences, environmental consulting, resource industries, research, and sustainable management of Earth’s natural systems.
