The Master of Laboratory Medicine requires the completion of 14 units, totaling 96 credits, designed to provide advanced knowledge and practical experience in medical laboratory science. The course comprises seven core units that establish foundational skills and discipline-specific knowledge necessary for practice in clinical laboratory settings. These core units cover essential areas in laboratory medicine, ensuring students develop the expertise to perform complex diagnostic procedures and apply best practices in patient testing and monitoring. In addition to the core, students complete one clinical placement unit, Clinical Placement in Laboratory Medicine (LMED29013), which provides hands-on experience in real-world laboratory environments. This placement allows students to apply their theoretical knowledge in practical settings, enhancing their technical skills, clinical decision-making, and professional competence.Students also select two advanced units from a specialised list, which includes Chemical Pathology 2, Genomic Pathology 2, Haematopathology 2, Infectious Diseases 2, Anatomical Pathology 2, Transfusion and Transplantation Medicine 2, and Immunopathology 2. These advanced units allow students to deepen their expertise in specific clinical areas and develop critical evaluative and analytical skills relevant to diagnostic science. Finally, students choose either four units from the Graduate Certificate of Research or four elective units from a specified list, which may include additional advanced pathology topics or professional development courses such as Think Big, Innovation and Sustainable Business Development, Business Ethics and Sustainability, Managerial Finance, and Organisational Change Management. This flexibility enables students to tailor their studies to align with career goals, whether in clinical practice, research, or leadership roles.Overall, the Master of Laboratory Medicine equips graduates with advanced technical, clinical, and professional skills, preparing them for roles as medical laboratory scientists in hospitals, research institutions, diagnostic centres, and public health agencies, with the capacity to contribute to high-quality patient care, laboratory innovation, and scientific advancement.
