In the first year of the journalism program at Bond University, students are introduced to the university’s innovative ‘digital-first’ approach, which emphasizes working with new and emerging technologies to prepare for the evolving media landscape. This forward-thinking ethos encourages students to explore a wide range of digital tools and platforms, enabling them to identify and create new career opportunities in journalism and related fields. During this foundational year, students gain essential skills in content creation, newsroom journalism, feature writing, blogging, and digital publishing. These subjects are designed to build practical competencies and introduce students to the fast-paced world of modern journalism. In addition to their media-focused coursework, students also complete three core university subjects that are part of every undergraduate degree. These subjects focus on building leadership skills in areas such as critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and ethical decision-making, all of which are crucial for success in both journalism and broader professional contexts. In the second year, students begin to specialize by choosing either a major, consisting of six subjects from a single study area, or a minor, consisting of four subjects. This structure allows for the development of in-depth expertise while also offering flexibility to explore additional areas of interest. Bond’s journalism program provides over 15 specialist options, enabling students to develop a niche reporting focus or to complement their journalism studies with another discipline such as public relations. This approach supports diverse career goals, from investigative reporting to media strategy. In the final semester, students complete a capstone project based on real-world industry practices. This project may be done individually or in a group and is designed to demonstrate the professional skills acquired throughout the degree. Students may also apply for an internship, subject to eligibility, to gain hands-on experience in a media-related workplace.
