Master of Science (Advanced) in Nuclear Science

COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (Advanced) in Nuclear Science at ANU is a 96-unit program designed to provide advanced, research-led training in the principles and applications of nuclear science. The degree combines extensive coursework with a dedicated research component, ensuring students develop both strong theoretical foundations and practical expertise in experimental and applied nuclear science. Core coursework covers key areas such as reactor science, nuclear radiation, accelerators and their applications, nuclear measurement techniques, and the nuclear fuel cycle. Students also have the opportunity to specialise further through advanced topics in reactor science, nuclear strategy, and nuclear law and regulation, alongside complementary studies in physics, mathematics, and engineering. In addition, science and society courses provide broader perspectives on nuclear policy, communication, regulation, and the societal implications of nuclear technologies, helping students engage critically with real-world issues. A key feature of the program is the 24-unit research component, undertaken over consecutive semesters, where students complete an independent project under academic supervision and present their findings in a written thesis and oral defence. Entry into this stage requires strong academic performance and supervisor approval. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in research, government, industry, regulation, and policy, as well as for further doctoral study in nuclear science and related disciplines.
