COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (Advanced) in Materials Science at ANU is a 96-unit, research-intensive program designed to develop advanced expertise in the structure, properties, and applications of modern materials. The degree combines rigorous coursework with a substantial research component, ensuring students gain both strong theoretical foundations and practical research experience in an interdisciplinary scientific environment. Core training begins with compulsory courses in research communication and proposal development, which prepare students for independent scientific investigation. Students then build depth through foundational subjects such as computational chemistry, chemical physics, structural elucidation, and soft matter, which provide essential understanding of how materials behave at the atomic and molecular level. The program also integrates broader perspectives through science and society courses, including science communication, policy, ethics, and environmental change, enabling students to understand the societal implications of materials innovation. Additional flexibility is provided through mathematics and thematic streams such as functional materials, biomaterials, and materials physics, allowing students to specialise in areas aligned with their interests and career goals. A defining feature of the degree is the 36-unit research project, completed over consecutive semesters under academic supervision, culminating in a written thesis and oral presentation.
