COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (Advanced) in Biological Sciences at ANU is a research-intensive program designed to provide advanced training in modern biological research, combining rigorous coursework with a substantial independent research project. The degree requires completion of 96 units, split evenly between coursework and research, with a strong emphasis on advanced-level study and laboratory or field-based scientific investigation. Students begin with core training in research communication and proposal development, alongside the opportunity to engage with interdisciplinary “science and society” subjects that explore the broader ethical, environmental, and communication dimensions of biological science. These may include topics such as biodiversity conservation, climate change, science communication, and environmental policy, allowing students to contextualise biological knowledge within real-world challenges. The program also includes quantitative training to develop strong analytical and data-handling skills, which are essential for modern biological research. A defining feature of the degree is its major research component, in which students undertake an extended supervised project over consecutive semesters, producing original research findings in areas such as biomedical science, ecology, genetics, or environmental biology. This culminates in a formal thesis demonstrating independent research capability. Entry into the research phase requires strong academic performance and supervisor approval, ensuring students are well prepared for advanced scientific investigation and potential PhD study or research careers.
