COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (Advanced) in Astronomy & Astrophysics at ANU is a two-year, research-intensive program designed to build advanced expertise in modern astrophysics while training students in both theoretical understanding and practical research skills. The degree is structured equally between coursework and research, allowing students to develop a strong foundation in core areas such as galaxies and cosmology, stellar physics, and astrophysical processes, alongside specialised training in observational techniques, astronomical computing, and research methods. Students also have the flexibility to choose complementary subjects from areas such as computational science, physics, mathematics, and data analysis, which support the quantitative demands of contemporary astronomy. A distinctive feature of the program is its strong research focus, with a major research project undertaken over consecutive semesters, enabling students to engage deeply with a specialised topic under academic supervision. This may involve analysing telescope data, developing theoretical models, or contributing to instrumentation design. In addition, science communication and broader science-policy subjects are included to help students communicate complex ideas effectively and understand the societal context of scientific work. Entry into the research component requires strong academic performance and supervisor approval, ensuring students are well-prepared for advanced independent research.
