Master of Science in Theoretical Physics

COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Theoretical Physics at ANU is a 96-unit program designed to provide advanced training in the fundamental principles governing the universe. The degree includes 36 units of compulsory coursework covering core areas such as quantum field theory, general relativity, applied mathematical methods in physics, nonlinear dynamics, and advanced topics in physics, ensuring students develop a deep theoretical foundation. A further 6 units are completed from foundational subjects including advanced quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, statistical mechanics, mathematical physics, or scientific computing, strengthening analytical and mathematical capabilities. The program also includes 12 units of Science and Society courses, including Physics for Future Leaders and additional subjects focused on communication, policy, ethics, and the societal role of science. Students complete a further 18 units from advanced physics or related foundational courses, allowing for deeper specialization in areas of interest. In addition, 24 units of electives from across ANU enable interdisciplinary exploration and flexibility in study design. Capstone learning is embedded in key advanced courses such as quantum field theory II, nonlinear dynamics, and Masters Special Topics in Physics, which integrate theoretical knowledge with research-oriented learning. Overall, the program prepares students for high-level research, academic careers, and roles requiring advanced analytical and theoretical expertise in physics and related scientific fields.
