COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Precision Instrumentation and Measurement at ANU is a 96-unit program designed to train students in the development and application of advanced scientific instruments used across physics, astronomy, and Earth sciences. The degree includes 36 units of compulsory coursework covering core technical areas such as electronics and data analysis, rapid prototyping, fundamentals of noise and measurement, applied optics, systems integration, and advanced imaging methods. These courses build strong foundations in designing, building, and evaluating high-precision measurement systems. Students also complete 12 units of specialised measurement and instrumentation subjects, which may include optical instrumentation, nuclear measurement, or advanced special topics in physics. Computational skills are developed through at least 6 units in scientific computing or programming for scientists, ensuring graduates are capable of handling complex data and modelling tasks. The program further includes 12 units of Science and Society courses, combining scientific training with innovation, leadership, communication, and policy awareness. Students may also take up to 24 units of electives from related disciplines such as physics, engineering, astronomy, or Earth sciences to broaden their expertise. Capstone learning is embedded in key advanced courses including prototyping, systems integration, and imaging methods, ensuring strong practical experience. Overall, the program equips graduates with the technical, analytical, and interdisciplinary skills needed for careers in research, industry, and scientific instrumentation development.
