Master of Science in Nuclear Science

COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Nuclear Science at ANU is a 96-unit program designed to provide advanced training in the principles, applications, and governance of nuclear science. The degree includes a strong coursework foundation, with at least 72 units drawn from core nuclear science subjects such as fundamentals of nuclear science, reactor science, nuclear radiation, accelerators and their applications, nuclear measurement, and the nuclear fuel cycle. Students are required to complete between 6 and 18 units of a research project course (PHYS8207), which may be taken multiple times and forms a key component of applied learning. The program also allows up to 24 units in specialised areas such as reactor science, nuclear strategy, international nuclear energy law, and nuclear regulation, enabling students to explore technical, legal, and policy dimensions of the field. A further 12 to 18 units are completed in Science and Society courses, covering areas such as science communication, public policy, regulation, risk, and engagement, ensuring graduates can operate effectively in multidisciplinary and policy-relevant environments. Limited elective study (up to 24 units) may be taken from ANU offerings in physics, mathematics, or engineering. Capstone learning is embedded in PHYS8207 and related research components, ensuring practical experience. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in research, industry, government, and nuclear policy roles.
