COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Materials Science at ANU is a 96-unit program that develops advanced expertise in the structure, properties, and applications of materials across chemistry, physics, engineering, and biology. It includes 24 units of foundational courses in areas such as computational chemistry, soft matter, chemical physics, and structural elucidation, providing a strong theoretical base for advanced study. A further 24 units of compulsory coursework focus on research development and communication, including research presentation skills, a research proposal, and the capstone Advanced Project in Chemistry, which forms the core applied learning experience of the degree. Students also complete 12 units of Science and Society courses to understand the broader ethical, communicative, and policy dimensions of scientific work, while up to 12 units of mathematics courses strengthen quantitative and modelling capabilities. The program allows specialisation through 12–24 units chosen from thematic areas such as functional and molecular materials, biomaterials, or materials physics, covering topics like catalysis, solid-state physics, bioinformatics, and molecular design. The degree culminates in a substantial research project embedded in CHEM8033, ensuring students gain hands-on experience in solving real-world materials science problems. Overall, the program integrates theory, interdisciplinary knowledge, and research training to prepare graduates for advanced scientific and industry careers.
