COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Earth Sciences at The Australian National University is a 96-unit program designed to provide advanced training in understanding Earth systems through a combination of coursework, research, and interdisciplinary study. The degree requires completion of core compulsory courses in Research Methods for Earth Sciences, Earth Science Research Proposal and Presentation, and Introduction to Natural Hazards, which together develop essential research skills, communication abilities, and foundational knowledge of Earth processes and environmental risks. Students also undertake a dedicated Earth Science Research Project, which forms a key experiential component of the program and allows them to engage in supervised, independent research. A significant portion of the degree is drawn from Earth and Marine Science coursework at the 6000–8000 level, ensuring depth in core disciplinary areas such as geoscience, oceanography, and environmental systems. In addition, students complete Science and Society courses that build skills in communication, policy awareness, and public engagement, preparing them to apply scientific knowledge in broader societal contexts. The program also allows for interdisciplinary study through approved courses across related scientific disciplines, including physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and computer science. With a balance of theoretical learning, practical research experience, and interdisciplinary flexibility, the degree prepares graduates for careers in Earth science research, environmental management, and related scientific industries.
