Master of Science in Biology and Bioinformatics

COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Quantitative Biology and Bioinformatics at ANU is a 96-unit program designed to develop advanced skills in applying computational, statistical, and mathematical methods to biological data. The degree requires completion of at least 24 units at the 8000-level and includes a structured combination of core learning, research training, and interdisciplinary study. Students complete a compulsory 6-unit course in research presentation skills, along with up to 18 units from foundational subjects such as biology, programming for scientists, quantitative biology, and regression modelling. A minimum of 12 units is taken from applied research-focused courses including special topics in biology, a research proposal, biotechnology practicum, or computational biomedicine projects. The program further requires at least 12 units from advanced quantitative biology and bioinformatics electives, covering areas such as data science for biologists, machine learning, bioinformatics applications, databases, and mathematical modelling. Another 12 units are completed from Science and Society courses, which build skills in communication, ethics, policy, and engagement in scientific practice. Students also complete 24 units of additional coursework from related disciplines such as biology, computer science, mathematics, engineering, neuroscience, or statistics. Capstone experiences are embedded in research-focused courses such as BIOL8706, BIOL8700, and BIOL8707, ensuring strong practical and research training. Overall, the program integrates biology with data science to prepare graduates for research and industry careers.
