COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Neuroscience at Australian National University is a 96-unit postgraduate program that provides advanced training in neuroscience through a combination of coursework, research preparation, and interdisciplinary study. The degree requires a minimum of 24 units at the 8000 level and begins with core courses in cellular and systems neuroscience, providing a comprehensive understanding of the nervous system from molecular mechanisms to complex brain functions and behaviour. Students also complete foundational studies in areas such as cell physiology or the biological basis of psychology, strengthening their understanding of the biological processes underlying neural function. The program emphasizes research skills through integrative courses including neuroscience research proposals, literature reviews, research essays, presentation skills, and supervised research projects. Students may further expand their expertise through electives covering genetics, biochemistry, bioethics, experimental design, health and disease, biomedical imaging, neuropsychology, mental health, biotechnology, and science communication. Opportunities to study the broader relationship between science and society are available through courses in environmental change, science policy, journalism, public engagement, and science leadership. Up to 24 units of ANU electives allow additional flexibility to tailor the degree to individual interests and career goals.
