COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Middle Eastern and Central Asian Studies (Advanced) at Australian National University is a 96-unit research-focused postgraduate program that provides in-depth interdisciplinary expertise on one of the world’s most strategically significant regions. The degree combines advanced regional studies, language training, research methodology, and an original thesis to develop strong analytical and research capabilities. Students may undertake up to 18 units of Arabic, Persian, or Turkish language study, building valuable linguistic and cultural competence. The program also includes introductory disciplinary courses covering topics such as Arabic culture, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and modern Turkey, providing essential regional foundations. A compulsory 12-unit research training course, Critical Approaches and Methods in the Study of the Middle East and Central Asia, equips students with advanced research skills and theoretical frameworks. Students then complete research project subjects focusing on areas such as Gulf security, Central Asian geopolitics, energy and security, and Islam in world politics, alongside advanced disciplinary courses exploring themes including political development, authoritarianism, democratisation, Islamic radicalism, sectarianism, Islamic banking, extremism, and regional conflicts. Limited experiential learning opportunities through internships and leadership-focused courses further enhance professional development. The program culminates in a 24-unit thesis (THES8103), producing an original research project of up to 20,000 words under academic supervision. Overall, the degree prepares graduates for careers in diplomacy, government, policy analysis, international development, research, and academia through advanced regional expertise and independent research training.
