Master of International Relations in International Relations

COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of International Relations at Australian National University is a 96-unit postgraduate program designed to provide advanced training in global politics, international systems, and contemporary geopolitical challenges. The degree begins with 24 units of compulsory courses that establish a strong theoretical and conceptual foundation, including International Relations Theory, International Relations in the Asia-Pacific, The Evolution of the International System, and Global Ethics. Students then complete at least 24 units of foundational electives covering key areas such as international political economy, global security, peace and conflict studies, foreign policy analysis, research design, and contemporary issues including atrocity prevention, information-age politics, and global protest movements. The program allows up to 48 units of specialised study through structured pathways such as Asian Studies, Pacific Studies, Diplomacy, Strategic Studies, or International Law, enabling students to tailor their degree to specific regional or thematic interests. Additional flexibility includes up to 12 units of language study across a wide range of global and regional languages, enhancing cultural and diplomatic competence. Students may also undertake up to 6 units of experiential learning through internships in international relations or Australian National Internships. For those meeting academic requirements, up to 24 units may be completed as a research thesis following foundational research training. Overall, the program develops strong analytical, theoretical, and practical skills, preparing graduates for careers in diplomacy, government, international organisations, security analysis, and global policy research.
