Master of International and Development Economics

COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of International and Development Economics at Australian National University is a 96-unit postgraduate program designed to develop advanced skills in economic theory, quantitative analysis, and applied policy relevant to global development challenges. The degree begins with a pre-sessional foundation in academic writing, mathematical methods, and econometrics to ensure students are prepared for rigorous economic study. Students then complete 24 units of core compulsory courses covering macroeconomic analysis, microeconomic analysis, econometric techniques, and mathematical methods in applied economics. This is followed by 18 units of advanced compulsory study in government and markets, open economy macroeconomics, and advanced applied microeconomics, providing deeper understanding of global economic systems. A further 12 units focus on applied policy issues such as development economics and applied macro and microeconomic challenges. Students also complete at least 12 units of research-based coursework, including options like research essays, applied econometrics case studies, policy evaluation, and quantitative international economics, strengthening independent research skills. Another 12 units are taken from specialised economics and econometrics electives covering areas such as labour economics, financial economics, development economics, environmental economics, and forecasting methods. Up to 12 units may be chosen from contextual fields including environment, finance, Indigenous studies, policy, governance, and national security, with optional experiential learning through internships or applied policy projects. Overall, the program equips graduates with strong analytical, research, and communication skills for careers in international organisations, government, and development policy institutions.
