COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Finance at Australian National University is a 96-unit advanced postgraduate program designed to build strong technical, analytical, and applied expertise in modern finance. The program is structured into two main stages: an initial 48-unit foundation component and a concluding 48-unit advanced component. In the first stage, students complete 42 units of compulsory core courses covering financial reporting, applied derivatives, corporate finance, investments, statistics, and regression modelling, along with an additional 6 units from supporting subjects such as business economics or financial mathematics. This stage develops essential quantitative and conceptual foundations needed to understand financial markets and instruments. In the second stage, students complete 30 units of advanced compulsory courses including applied valuation, portfolio construction, advanced corporate finance, advanced investments, and a capstone applied finance project. These courses focus on higher-level financial decision-making, strategic analysis, and real-world application of financial theory. The remaining 18 units allow students to choose from specialised electives such as internships, student-managed funds, decentralised finance (DeFi), Asian capital markets, trading and markets, financial intermediation, and applied statistical methods. This flexible structure enables students to tailor their learning toward career interests in investment banking, asset management, financial consulting, fintech, and risk management. Overall, the program develops highly skilled finance professionals capable of analysing complex financial systems and making data-driven decisions in global financial markets.
