COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Environment (Advanced) at Australian National University is a 96-unit program structured to combine advanced coursework with a substantial research component. Students complete 48 units of coursework and 48 units of research, with at least 48 units taken at 8000-level, ensuring a strong postgraduate research focus. The coursework begins with 24 units of compulsory core subjects, including ENVS6025 Complex Environmental Problems in Action, ENVS6528 Environmental Policy, ENVS8016 Contemporary Perspectives in Environment–Society Interaction, and ENVS8019 Sustainable Futures: Thinking in Systems, which collectively build foundational knowledge in environmental systems, policy, and sustainability thinking. Students then complete 6 units of research methods training from options such as environmental modelling, social research, or environmental monitoring, followed by 6 units of application-focused courses like GIS, impact assessment, environmental modelling, science communication, or internship opportunities. An additional 12 units are selected from advanced 6000- or 8000-level Environment or Environment and Development courses to deepen disciplinary expertise. The remaining 48 units are dedicated to ENVS8000 Masters Dissertation, undertaken over consecutive semesters, forming a major research project under academic supervision. Progression requires achieving a minimum 70% weighted average in the first coursework stage and securing supervisor approval for a feasible research topic, often requiring on-campus engagement. Failure to meet these requirements may result in transfer to a related, less research-intensive program.
