Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering

COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering at the Australian National University is a 96-unit postgraduate program designed to develop advanced technical expertise and professional engineering skills in electrical engineering and related computing disciplines. The program combines compulsory coursework, specialised electives, and a capstone experience to prepare students for complex, real-world engineering challenges. Students complete 36–48 units of compulsory courses covering control systems, power systems, power electronics, systems engineering, and professional practice, with an emphasis on communication, ethical practice, innovation, and systems thinking. A major design or research component is included through either a 12-unit group project or a 24-unit research project undertaken over two semesters, depending on academic performance and approval requirements. In addition, students must complete at least 48 units of electrical engineering and computing electives, including a minimum of 24 units at the 8000-level, allowing advanced specialisation in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital systems, robotics, signal processing, wireless communications, power systems, renewable energy technologies, smart grids, and autonomous systems. Students also have the flexibility to take up to 12 units of electives from across the university, enabling broader interdisciplinary learning. The program integrates theoretical foundations with practical application, enabling graduates to design, analyse, and optimise advanced electrical and electronic systems. Graduates are well prepared for careers in power and energy systems, telecommunications, automation, robotics, artificial intelligence, research and development, and high-level engineering roles in industry and government.
