COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Energy Change (Advanced) at the Australian National University is a 96-unit postgraduate program that combines advanced coursework with a substantial research component focused on energy systems, climate change, and sustainable transformation. The degree requires 48–72 units of coursework and 24–48 units of research, with at least 48 units completed at 8000-level to ensure advanced academic depth. Students begin with 18 units of core courses covering energy resources, renewable technologies, complex environmental systems, and physics for future leaders, providing a strong interdisciplinary foundation. They then complete specialised coursework in energy law, energy economics, and climate change science and policy, along with up to 36 units of electives spanning engineering, environmental science, policy, economics, sustainability, communication, and energy technology. The research component consists of a 24–48 unit Masters Research Project (PHYS8000), undertaken over consecutive semesters and requiring supervisor approval, satisfactory academic performance (minimum 70% weighted average in the first 48 units), and demonstrated project feasibility. Research training is embedded through core environmental systems and climate courses, ensuring students develop strong methodological and analytical skills. The program emphasises the integration of scientific, technical, economic, and policy perspectives to address real-world energy transition challenges. Graduates are prepared for advanced careers in renewable energy, climate policy, environmental consultancy, government, international organisations, and research, or for further doctoral study in energy and sustainability-related fields.
