COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Energy Change at the Australian National University is a 96-unit postgraduate program designed to equip students with advanced interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to address global energy transition and climate challenges. The degree requires a minimum of 24 units at the 8000-level and combines compulsory coursework, specialised disciplinary study, and flexible electives. Students begin with 18 units of core courses covering energy resources and renewable technologies, complex environmental problem-solving, and physics for future leaders, providing a strong foundation in both technical and systems-based thinking. The program also includes structured disciplinary streams: at least 6 units in energy and climate law, 6 units in energy economics, and 6 units in climate change science and policy, ensuring students develop expertise across regulatory, economic, and environmental dimensions of energy systems. A further 60 units of electives allow students to tailor their studies across areas such as climate science, environmental policy, renewable energy engineering, sustainability, GIS, development studies, entrepreneurship, nuclear energy systems, and science communication. The program’s capstone experience is embedded in ENVS6025, where students apply their knowledge to real-world complex environmental problems. This structure ensures both breadth and depth, integrating science, engineering, policy, and economics. Graduates gain the ability to analyse and design solutions for energy and climate challenges, preparing them for careers in renewable energy industries, government, environmental consulting, international organisations, research institutions, and sustainability-focused innovation sectors.
