COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Economics at the Australian National University is a 96-unit postgraduate program designed to provide advanced training in economic theory, quantitative methods, and applied policy analysis. The degree consists of 48 units of compulsory foundational coursework covering optimisation, microeconomic and macroeconomic analysis, advanced theory, mathematical techniques, econometrics, and statistics, ensuring students develop strong analytical and technical skills in modern economics. The remaining 48 units form a concluding component that combines advanced theory and specialised electives. Students complete 18 units of core advanced subjects in microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, and applied case studies in economic analysis and econometrics. The remaining 30 units are chosen from a broad range of electives, allowing students to specialise in areas such as international economics, financial economics, public sector economics, health economics, labour economics, environmental economics, industrial organisation, game theory, behavioural economics, development policy, and computational methods. An advanced research essay option is also available for students interested in deeper independent inquiry. Progression to the concluding component requires students to achieve a minimum 70% weighted average mark in key foundational subjects, including optimisation, advanced microeconomics, advanced macroeconomics, and econometrics, ensuring strong academic performance before undertaking higher-level study.
