COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Earth Sciences (Advanced) at the Australian National University is a 96-unit postgraduate program designed to provide advanced training in Earth system science through a structured combination of coursework, research preparation, and a major research project. The program requires at least 48 units of coursework and at least 48 units at the 8000-level, ensuring advanced academic depth. Students begin with 12 units of compulsory research training, including Research Methods for Earth Sciences and a Research Proposal and Presentation course, which develop essential scientific inquiry, analytical, and communication skills. Additional coursework includes 6–12 units of research or experiential learning such as special topics or internships, and 6–12 units of science communication courses that strengthen public engagement and presentation skills. Students also complete further Earth and Marine Sciences courses along with up to 12 units of electives, allowing academic flexibility. A defining feature of the program is the substantial research component, consisting of 36–48 units of an Earth Science Research Project completed over two consecutive semesters. Entry into the research phase requires a minimum 70% weighted average mark in the first 48 units and approval of a research supervisor, ensuring academic readiness and project feasibility. Students who do not meet these requirements may be transferred to a standard Master of Science pathway. Graduates gain advanced skills in geoscience research, fieldwork, data analysis, and scientific communication, preparing them for careers in environmental science, resource industries, climate research, academia, and further doctoral study.
