COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Biotechnology (Advanced) at the Australian National University is a 96-unit postgraduate program designed to provide advanced training in biotechnology through a structured combination of coursework, research preparation, and a major research project. The program consists of 48–60 units of coursework and 36–48 units of research, with at least 48 units completed at 8000-level, ensuring advanced academic depth. Students complete foundational courses in molecular biology, genetics, chemical biology, and computational chemistry, alongside compulsory research training in presentation skills and research proposal development. Additional study in science and society develops communication, ethics, and engagement skills, with options such as science communication, bioethics, and science policy. Students further specialise in thematic areas including Synthetic Biology, Medicinal Chemistry, or Medical Biotechnology, selecting courses in genetics, bioinformatics, immunology, drug design, cancer biology, and computational biomedicine. The program includes a substantial research component undertaken through an advanced project in chemistry or biology, or a medical research project, typically completed over two semesters and forming a major part of the degree. Students must maintain strong academic performance in their first 48 units and secure supervisor approval to continue in the advanced program. A key feature is its emphasis on research training at AQF Level 9, ensuring students develop independent investigative skills. Graduates are prepared for careers in biotechnology, biomedical research, pharmaceuticals, healthcare innovation, and doctoral study in life sciences and related fields.
