Master of Archaeological and Evolutionary Science

COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Archaeological Science is a 96-unit postgraduate degree that provides advanced scientific training in archaeology, biological anthropology, and human evolutionary studies through a strong combination of theoretical knowledge, research, and practical experience. The program requires students to complete at least 24 units of advanced 8000-level coursework and includes a compulsory course in quantitative methods, ensuring graduates develop strong analytical and data interpretation skills. Students undertake 18 units of research-intensive courses that explore topics such as archaeology, climate change, ancient biomolecules, and theoretical approaches in biological anthropology. A further 24 units of foundational study provide broad knowledge of archaeological traditions, Australian archaeology, ritual and religion, European and Southeast Asian archaeology, Indigenous engagement, and human skeletal analysis. The methodological component comprises 36 units selected from a diverse range of specialised courses covering environmental archaeology, scientific dating techniques, vertebrate remains analysis, domestication processes, field schools, research projects, GIS and spatial analysis, palaeoenvironmental reconstruction, human evolution, evolutionary biology, and advanced biological anthropology. Students also complete 12 units of electives, allowing further academic customisation. The program offers specialisations in Bioarchaeology and Forensic Anthropology or Human Evolution, enabling students to develop expertise in specific areas of interest. Graduates gain advanced laboratory, fieldwork, research, and analytical skills that prepare them for careers in archaeology, heritage management, museums, forensic science, environmental research, conservation, and doctoral study.
