COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Accounting (Advanced) is a 96-unit research-intensive postgraduate degree designed for academically strong students seeking advanced expertise in accounting and preparation for doctoral study. The program consists of 66 units of compulsory coursework, including advanced studies in accounting, financial reporting, corporate accounting, commercial law, statistics, research methods, and a substantial 24-unit Commerce Masters Thesis. Students further tailor their studies through 18 units of elective courses in areas such as management accounting, auditing, taxation, sustainability reporting, data analytics, forensic accounting, business economics, and finance. In addition, students complete 6 units of quantitative training in econometrics or regression modelling and 6 units of advanced research-focused coursework. A distinctive feature of the program is its strong emphasis on research, with BUSN8013 Seminar in Research Method in Commerce and the 24-unit thesis (BUSN8804) comprising entirely research-based assessment. To remain enrolled in the advanced program, students must achieve a minimum weighted average mark of 75% across their first 48 units and secure a confirmed academic supervisor. Students who do not meet these requirements are transferred to the Master of Accounting or Master of Professional Accounting. Although completion of the degree does not guarantee admission to a PhD program, it provides rigorous research training, advanced analytical skills, and substantial independent research experience, preparing graduates for doctoral studies and research-oriented careers in academia, government, industry, and professional practice.
