Bachelor of Criminology in Criminology

COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Criminology requires completion of 144 units designed to build strong foundations in criminological theory, research methods, and the study of crime, justice, and social policy. Students may complete a maximum of 60 units at the 1000-level and must include at least 12 units of Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving courses. The core of the degree consists of 48 units of compulsory courses, including foundational subjects such as CRIM1001 Criminological Imaginations, CRIM1002 Criminological Perspectives, CRIM3001 Professional Perspectives on Crime and Prevention, CRIM3005 Diversity and Crime, CRIM3010 Doing Criminology, and key social research courses including SOCR1001 Foundations of Social Research, SOCY2038 Quantitative Research Methods, and SOCY2043 Qualitative Research Methods. Students then complete 6 units from a broad introductory list of courses across disciplines such as Anthropology, Politics, Economics, History, Gender Studies, Indigenous Studies, Philosophy, Security Studies, and Sociology, providing interdisciplinary context. In addition, students take up to 30 units from advanced criminology-related electives covering topics such as policing, cybercrime, organised crime, forensic psychology, youth crime, drugs and crime, courts, punishment, and crime prevention. A further minimum of 12 units is completed from advanced or applied courses such as internships, research placements, forensic linguistics, terrorism studies, or policy-focused subjects. The remaining 48 units are flexible electives offered by ANU, allowing students to broaden their studies or deepen criminology expertise. Overall, the program integrates theory, methods, and applied learning to prepare graduates for careers in criminal justice, research, policy, and related fields.
