COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts (MA) in Geography program offers flexible study options designed to suit a range of academic and professional goals. Students can pursue a two-year thesis option, which includes three graduate courses and a research thesis, typically completed over six terms, or choose the one-year major research paper (MRP) option, which requires six courses and a substantial research paper completed within three terms. An additional specialized stream in Environmental Data Analytics (EDA) allows students to focus on geospatial and environmental data skills over one year, consisting of two semesters of course work followed by a semester-long research placement. The EDA stream meets growing labour market demands for professionals trained in environmental analytics, with applications in planning, policy, regulation, and environmental management across the public, private, and non-profit sectors. The program is supported by faculty with wide-ranging research strengths in human geography, covering topics such as food systems, political ecology, spatial behavior, sustainable transportation, immigration, ethnicity, gender, cultural transformation, historical landscapes, local labour markets, and economic development. This breadth of expertise fosters a rich academic environment where students are encouraged to pursue critical research questions and develop the skills necessary to engage with contemporary social and environmental challenges through geographic inquiry.
