COURSE CURRICULUM

Laurier’s Health Sciences program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to build a strong foundation in both the biological sciences and the study of human health, preparing students to tackle complex health challenges from multiple perspectives. In the first year, core courses such as Health Issues I and II, Unifying Life Processes, Biological Diversity and Evolution, Fundamentals of Chemistry I and II, and Introduction to Psychology I and II provide essential knowledge of biological systems, human behaviour, and chemical processes, while Introductory Calculus for the Natural Sciences develops quantitative skills necessary for scientific analysis. Students can also select electives like Reading Fiction, Mechanics for the Life Sciences, or Thermodynamics and Waves for the Life Sciences to broaden their understanding of scientific and analytical concepts. Upper-year courses build on this foundation with practical and research-focused learning, including Research Methods for the Health Sciences, Foundations of the Canadian Healthcare System, Epidemiology, Social Determinants of Health, Introduction to Immunology, and COVID-19: From Cell to Society, allowing students to explore the interactions between biology, society, and health outcomes. Through this interdisciplinary approach, graduates gain critical thinking, analytical, and research skills, equipping them for careers or further study in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, molecular medical sciences, and public or community health, with the ability to address real-world health issues and improve well-being at individual and population levels.
