COURSE CURRICULUM

Laurier’s Bachelor of Music program provides a comprehensive and flexible curriculum that allows students to explore a wide range of musical disciplines while developing both technical skill and creative artistry. In the first year, students engage in foundational courses such as Studio Lessons and Studio Class, Large Ensemble, Ear Training Lab 1, Theory 1 – Foundations, and Theory 2 – Functional Grammars, alongside keyboard courses tailored to piano and non-piano majors and Foundational Vocal Techniques for vocalists. Three elective courses allow students to begin exploring personal interests, with options including Guitars, Hooks and Beats: Music Since 1950, Introduction to Composition, Music Therapy, Music Education & Community Music, Small Group Performance, Digital Music, Live Sound, and Music Notation. Upper-year courses build on this foundation and offer advanced opportunities in Songwriting, Instrumental Conducting, Pedagogy and Integrated Wellness, History of Music in Popular Culture, Hip-Hop and Spoken Word Practices, and Monetizing Your Music Creations, providing both creative and practical skills for a career in music. By combining individualized mentorship, ensemble experiences, applied theory, and exposure to music production and performance practices, students gain the artistic, technical, and professional competencies needed to succeed in a variety of music-related careers, whether as performers, educators, composers, producers, or innovators in the evolving music industry.
