COURSE CURRICULUM

Bachelor of Music Therapy (BMT) begin their studies in the Bachelor of Music program, completing all core Bachelor of Music courses to build a strong foundation in performance, theory, composition, and musicianship. In addition to these mandatory courses, students take three key electives—Introduction to Music Therapy, Introduction to Psychology I, and Introduction to Psychology II—which provide essential knowledge of therapeutic principles and human behavior as a basis for clinical practice. Upper-year coursework in the BMT program is designed to integrate music and therapy in applied settings, emphasizing both the creative and clinical aspects of the profession. Students engage in specialized courses such as Principles of Music Therapy, Clinical Improvisation I and II, and Medical Music Therapy, which focus on developing intervention strategies, improvisational skills, and music applications for diverse populations, including those in healthcare and community settings. Courses like Music, Culture, and Community explore the societal and cultural dimensions of music therapy, fostering awareness of diverse client needs. The program culminates in intensive Music Therapy Internship I and II placements, where students gain supervised, hands-on clinical experience, applying their skills in real-world contexts, refining their professional judgment, and preparing for certification with the Canadian Association of Music Therapists and a successful career as a licensed music therapist.
