COURSE CURRICULUM

Youth and Children’s Studies program offers a well-rounded curriculum that combines foundational knowledge with practical and applied learning. In the first year, students build a strong base through core courses such as Foundations for Community Engagement and Service, Introduction to Indigenous Studies, Introduction to Psychology I and II, and Studying Youth and Children: An Introduction. These courses introduce key concepts related to child and youth development, community involvement, and the social and cultural contexts that shape young people’s lives. Students can further explore their interests through electives like Design Thinking I: Foundations, Introduction to Criminology, and Love and Its Myths, which provide additional perspectives on creativity, social issues, and human relationships. As students progress into upper years, they engage with more specialized topics such as Children’s Rights, Children, Toys and Media, Picturing Childhood: Representations of the Child through Time, Adoption: Past and Present, Youth and Sexuality, and Indigenous Children and Families. These courses encourage critical thinking about the experiences and representation of children and youth across different contexts. Through this combination of theory and hands-on learning, students develop the skills needed to support and advocate for young people, preparing them for careers in education, social services, community work, and related fields.
