COURSE CURRICULUM

Laurier’s Medieval and Medievalism Studies program offers students a unique opportunity to explore the Middle Ages from historical, cultural, and modern perspectives. In the first year, you begin with the core course Discovering the Middle Ages, providing a foundational understanding of medieval societies, their institutions, and cultural practices. You also choose at least one course connecting the Middle Ages to modern media, such as Digital Valhallas: The Vikings in Video Games, The Middle Ages on Television, Harry Potter and Medieval Culture, or historically focused courses like War, Conflict and Rebellion in Late Antiquity or the Middle Ages, and World History before 1500. In addition, you select 4.0 elective credits from a variety of disciplines, allowing you to explore interests in history, literature, art, or related fields. Upper-year courses deepen your expertise with topics such as Castle and Village: Class and Material Culture, which examines the daily lives and social structures of medieval communities, City and Cathedral: The Church in Medieval Society, exploring the influence of religious institutions, and An Introduction to Medieval Manuscripts, which teaches skills in reading and interpreting historical texts. Through this combination of historical analysis and modern interpretation, students gain critical thinking, research, and analytical skills while building a strong interdisciplinary foundation that prepares them for careers in education, heritage, media, or further academic study.
