COURSE CURRICULUM

Languages at Laurier program, students explore the structure, use, and cultural significance of multiple languages while developing advanced communication skills. First-year students select three core courses from options such as Language Acquisition, Cognition, and Society, Sound, Structure, and Meaning, Cultural Perspectives I and II, Mediterranean Culture and Civilization I and II, or Mare Nostrum: Mediterranean Travels. Alongside these core courses, students complete 3.5 credits in French and Spanish, and choose an additional language course from Arabic, German, Indigenous languages, Italian, Latin, or another language with departmental permission. This combination ensures a strong foundation in both linguistic theory and practical language skills. Upper-year courses deepen students’ knowledge and cultural understanding, including specialized classes such as Literary Translation, Language Through Popular Culture, Francophone Myths, Legends and Voodoo, History of Spain and Latin America, and Spanish Art, Music, and Media. Through these courses, students gain insight into how language reflects and shapes culture, history, and identity, while honing their ability to communicate effectively across linguistic and cultural boundaries. This curriculum prepares graduates for careers in international business, education, translation, diplomacy, and other fields requiring advanced multilingual competence and cultural literacy, empowering them to engage meaningfully in a globalized world.
