COURSE CURRICULUM

History program offers a comprehensive curriculum that introduces students to both foundational and specialized topics in the field. In the first year, students engage with core courses such as Ancient History in a Global Context, History Detectives, History of Popular Culture, and Great Battles in History, providing a broad understanding of historical events, methodologies, and cultural narratives. First-year electives allow students to explore diverse perspectives, including Introduction to Indigenous Studies, Literature and Crime, Studying Youth and Children: An Introduction, and The Engaged Citizen: Social and Environmental Justice, encouraging critical thinking about the social, cultural, and political dimensions of history. As students advance, upper-year courses build on this foundation with more focused study, including Crime, Sex and Scandal in 19th-Century Britain, Memory, Monuments and Museums, Local and Family History, and Popular Cultures of East Asia. These courses combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills in historical research, archival work, and interpretation, enabling students to analyze primary sources, evaluate historical narratives, and understand the broader implications of historical events. Graduates develop strong critical thinking, writing, and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in education, museums, archival work, public history, or further graduate studies in history and related fields, while cultivating a deeper understanding of the past and its impact on the present.
