Laurier’s French Studies program, students’ course placement depends on their prior knowledge of French, ensuring they begin at the level that best matches their skills. First-year courses include Introductory French I and II for beginners, Practical French I and II for those with some prior knowledge, and specialized courses such as Atelier in Composition and Stylistics, which focuses on improving writing and stylistic skills. Language through Popular Culture I offers a dynamic approach to learning French through media, film, and other cultural content, helping students engage with the language in authentic contexts while strengthening communication skills. As students advance, upper-year courses expand their linguistic and cultural competence. Sample upper-year courses include Media and the News in French, exploring how journalism and media shape society; Graphic Novels and Animation, which examines visual storytelling; Creative Writing in French, fostering original literary expression; Music in French, analyzing Francophone musical traditions; and Cultural and Literary Representations of Montréal, offering insight into the city’s cultural identity. Elective options allow interdisciplinary exploration, such as Spanish Art, Music and Media, Spanish Language Through Cinema, and Language Acquisition, Cognition, and Society, helping students compare languages and cultures. Through this progression, students develop both advanced language proficiency and a deep understanding of Francophone culture, preparing them for global careers requiring bilingual skills.
