COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film Studies program at Wilfrid Laurier University provides students with a comprehensive exploration of film as both an art form and a cultural phenomenon, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills. In the first year, students choose two core courses from options such as Introduction to Film Art, Film and Narrative, Film and the City, or Introduction to Film and Society, which introduce fundamental concepts in film history, analysis, and cultural context. Alongside these core courses, students select eight additional courses in areas of interest, including Communication Studies, Digital Humanities, English, Cultural Studies, Sociology, and other disciplines, allowing for an interdisciplinary approach that situates film within broader social, historical, and technological contexts. In upper-year studies, students engage with specialized topics that deepen their understanding of film theory, production, and industry practices. Sample courses include The Superhero Film, Women Filmmakers, Bollywood Film, Film Musical, The Business of Film, Introduction to Film Editing, Introduction to 3D Animation, and Video Production. These courses emphasize both critical analysis and hands-on experience, enabling students to develop skills in storytelling, visual design, editing, and animation, while also examining film’s cultural, social, and economic impact. Graduates leave the program equipped for careers in filmmaking, media production, animation, broadcasting, film criticism, or further studies in film and media, prepared to navigate the evolving landscape of visual storytelling and media industries.
