COURSE CURRICULUM

The English program at Wilfrid Laurier University provides students with a rich and varied curriculum designed to develop strong analytical, interpretive, and creative skills. In the first year, students select two core courses from options such as Literature and Catastrophe, Literature and Crime, Literature and Love, Literature for Our Time, or Reading Fiction, which introduce them to diverse literary forms, themes, and critical approaches. Alongside these, students choose eight additional courses in areas that match their interests, including Film Studies, Communication Studies, Language and Literature, Anthropology, and more, allowing for an interdisciplinary approach that connects literature with broader cultural, social, and historical contexts. Upper-year courses expand on these foundations and offer specialized topics such as Romantic Radicals, The Narratives of Empire, Introduction to Creative Writing, Tween Literature and Culture, Sport Literature, Creative Writing: Poetry, 18th-Century Fiction: Sex, Shopping, and Scandal, and Reading the Vampire. These courses encourage students to explore complex narratives, cultural histories, and creative expression while refining critical thinking, research, and writing skills. By blending theoretical study with practical applications, the program prepares graduates for careers in writing, communication, editing, publishing, education, and law, while also equipping them with transferable skills for navigating diverse professional and cultural environments in today’s global society.
