COURSE CURRICULUM

Economics and Financial Management at Wilfrid Laurier University combines foundational courses in economics, finance, and business with opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, preparing students for careers in finance, business, and policy. In the first year, students complete core courses such as Introductory Calculus for Business and Social Science or Calculus I, which develop strong quantitative and analytical skills, and Introduction to Financial Accounting, which provides a solid foundation in understanding and interpreting financial statements. Introduction to Macroeconomics and Introduction to Microeconomics build essential knowledge of economic behavior, market dynamics, and policy impacts, while Understanding the Business Environment contextualizes these skills within organizational and societal frameworks. Students also choose 2.5 credits of non-economics electives to explore broader interests, such as Environment, Sustainability and Society, Evil and Its Symbols, or Pirates! A World History, promoting critical thinking and interdisciplinary insight. In upper years, students progress to specialized courses that deepen their understanding of financial systems and economic analysis, including Economics of the Canadian Banking and Financial System, Options, Futures and Swaps, Entrepreneurial Finance, and Economics of Trade, providing advanced knowledge of investment strategies, financial markets, and economic policy. Through this blend of theoretical and applied courses, graduates gain analytical, quantitative, and decision-making skills essential for careers in banking, investment management, corporate finance, consulting, and public policy, while also preparing for further professional credentials such as the Chartered Professional Accountant or CFA designation.
