COURSE CURRICULUM

Cultural Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University offers a curriculum designed to provide students with a strong foundation in cultural theory while encouraging exploration of diverse social and artistic perspectives. In the first year, students begin with two core courses, Exploring Cultural Studies and Studying Popular Culture, which introduce the key concepts, methods, and critical approaches used in analyzing cultural phenomena and understanding their social significance. Alongside these foundational courses, students choose from eight additional courses in areas such as Communication Studies, Sociology, Women and Gender Studies, or Anthropology, allowing them to tailor their learning to their individual interests and broaden their understanding of cultural influences on society. Sample first-year electives include Cultures Today, which examines contemporary cultural practices; Canadian Communication in Context, focusing on media and communication in Canadian society; Introduction to Women and Gender Studies, exploring gender dynamics and social structures; and Introduction to Sociology, providing insight into societal organization and behavior. In upper years, students engage with more specialized courses, including Cartoons and Comics, analyzing visual storytelling and cultural meaning; Cultural Studies of Popular Music, exploring music’s social and political impact; Game Cultures, examining digital play and interactive media; and Networked and Digital Cultures, investigating technology’s role in shaping cultural practices. Through this combination of core, elective, and upper-year courses, students develop critical thinking, analytical, and research skills while gaining practical insights into contemporary cultural issues, preparing them for diverse career paths in media, education, social advocacy, and creative industries.
