COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Criminology at Wilfrid Laurier University provides students with a structured curriculum that combines foundational knowledge, specialized study, and interdisciplinary perspectives. In the first year, students take core courses such as Introduction to Criminology and Introduction to the Criminal Justice System, which offer essential insights into the nature of crime, the functioning of legal and correctional systems, and the societal responses to criminal behavior. First-year students also complete one credit of criminology electives and three additional elective credits, allowing them to explore complementary areas of study and develop a broader understanding of social and behavioral sciences. Sample electives include Introduction to Psychology, which examines human behavior; Police Psychology, exploring the role of psychological principles in law enforcement; Leadership and Personal Development, building essential professional skills; and Introduction to Indigenous Studies, providing cultural and historical context relevant to justice and social policy. In upper years, students engage with more specialized courses, including Global Terrorism and Security, which analyzes the causes and impacts of transnational violence; Multiple Murder, examining patterns and psychological profiles of offenders; White Collar Crime, studying corporate and financial criminality; and Gladue Principles, exploring legal frameworks that recognize the unique experiences of Indigenous peoples in the justice system. Together, these courses equip students with analytical, research, and problem-solving skills, preparing graduates for careers in law enforcement, social services, policy analysis, advocacy, and further studies in criminology, law, or related fields.
