COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Ancient Studies program offers a diverse and engaging curriculum that introduces students to the history, culture, and ideas of early civilizations while developing critical thinking and analytical skills. In the first year, students take core courses that provide a strong foundation in ancient history and culture, including Mysteries of the Ancient World, Greece: Minotaur to Alexander, Ancient Rome: Not Just Caesar, War, Conflict and Rebellion in Late Antiquity, and Ancient Heroes: Story and Tradition. These courses explore the mythology, political structures, and social dynamics of early civilizations, encouraging students to examine how ancient societies have influenced modern culture. As students progress into upper years, they have the opportunity to choose from a variety of specialized courses that delve deeper into specific topics and historical contexts. Sample upper-year courses include Crime and Justice in Antiquity, which examines legal systems and social order; The World of Ghengis Khan, exploring Mongol empire expansion and influence; Magic and Religion in the Ancient World, investigating belief systems and ritual practices; The Afterlife in Ancient and Medieval Thought, analyzing concepts of death and immortality; and Waking the Dead: Voices from the Near East, which studies archaeology and ancient texts. Together, these courses provide a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to understanding ancient civilizations, their legacies, and their continuing relevance in today’s world.
